He was educated at Yale University, Medical College of Georgia, and University of Michigan. While at Michigan he participated in a research program run by the National Institute of Health and is where he developed a love of scientific research. Earlier in his career, He was Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Later he served as Chairman and Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Through the years, he and his colleagues performed infant and pediatric heart transplants in the U.S. and numerous other countries. In 2002, he began focusing on a new dietary philosophy. In treating his patient's nutritional needs he saw positive results. His first book, Dr. Gundry's Diet Evolution, was published in 2008.
