This story was written for the relatives of Sergeant Edward H. Petrunyak "Sonny." Sonny and my mother were first cousins. They were nearly the same age, and they grew up together in the little village of Hawk Run, Pennsylvania. In 1950, Sonny went off to war, and never returned. He was listed as "Missing in Action." His remains were never recovered. No one knows what really happened to him. . . . Now, more than two years after the work began, and more than 70 years after Sonny's death, this story about Sonny's military service and supreme sacrifice for his country has finally been completed. Hopefully this work will answer some of the questions family members have had these past 70 years regarding the military service and supreme sacrifice made by our relative: Sergeant Edward H. Petrunyak. -- James J. Hanslovan, pg. ix. |
