When the Civil War erupts, it threatens the lives of the men of the Third Northern New York Regiment and also the faith of their chaplain, Rev. John Wesley Sanders. At the war's outset, John is a pastor in a bucolic town in northern New York, where he believes he and his neighbors will be sheltered from the horrors that lie ahead. His good friend James Barnett is asked to serve as the colonel for a new Union regiment and recruits soldiers from among the local residents. He invites John to serve as the regiment's chaplain, but John hesitates. Even though he strongly supports abolition, he struggles to reconcile warfare with a faith that teaches love for enemies. As John watches his neighbors and church members enlist in the regiment, he tries to resolve the growing conflict in his spirit between his duty to God and his duty to these men and their cause. The courage and faithfulness of these new recruits and their families persuades John to exchange his comfortable ministry for the hardships of an army chaplain. Through a baptism of fire, John learns how to carry out his new vocation and discovers not only the true nature of the duty to which he has been called, but also the brutal sacrifices it will require of him, his faith, and the men in his regiment. |
